Health experts are reminding patients that GLP-1 medications, including widely used drugs such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound, are most effective when paired with proper nutrition, exercise and lifestyle support.
The drugs, originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes, have become popular for weight loss. They help regulate blood sugar, slow digestion and increase feelings of fullness, which can lead to reduced appetite and smaller food portions.
While these medications can support weight loss and improve health conditions linked to obesity, experts say long-term results depend on maintaining healthy habits.
Nutrition key to protecting muscle
Registered dietitian Peyton Cherry of Ochsner Health said people using GLP-1 medications often need to pay close attention to nutrition as they lose weight.
Doctors warn that rapid weight loss can also lead to muscle loss if diet is not properly managed. Maintaining muscle is important for metabolism, bone health and long-term weight control.
Experts suggest that for every three pounds of fat lost, around one pound of lean mass, including muscle, may also be lost without proper nutrition and exercise.
To help prevent this, healthcare professionals recommend prioritising protein intake. A simple guideline is to aim for a daily amount equal to half of a person’s target body weight in grams. For example, someone aiming for 150 pounds may need at least 75 grams of protein per day.
Exercise supports long-term results
Alongside diet, strength training is considered important for preserving muscle during weight loss. This can include resistance bands, bodyweight exercises or light weightlifting a few times per week.
Regular walking and other cardiovascular activity are also encouraged to support overall health and fitness.
Experts say these activities do not need to be intense or time-consuming but should be consistent.
Fibre and digestion concerns
GLP-1 medications can cause digestive side effects such as constipation, bloating and nausea. To help manage this, experts recommend increasing fibre intake gradually.
A typical target for most adults is between 25 and 35 grams of fibre per day, along with adequate water intake. Increasing fibre too quickly without enough fluids may worsen constipation.
Balancing food intake and nutrients
Because GLP-1 drugs slow digestion and reduce appetite, some people may struggle to get enough vitamins and minerals through food alone.
Experts advise keeping meals balanced and focusing on nutrient-dense foods. In some cases, supplements may be recommended under medical supervision.
High-fat meals may also worsen side effects such as nausea or bloating, so smaller and simpler meals may be easier to tolerate.
Lifestyle approach recommended
Experts stress that GLP-1 medications should be seen as part of a broader approach to weight management rather than a standalone solution.
They recommend combining medication with balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, good sleep and ongoing medical support.
As one expert noted, obesity treatment works in layers, with medication acting as one part of a wider health strategy aimed at long-term results.
